A New Chapter: Melissa Fouts Photography
I’m so excited to share something close to my heart—my photography business! I’ve quietly taken on clients for over a year now, and I want to finally introduce this passion on my blog and share my website.
My photography journey began in one of the sweetest, most personal ways: capturing the little moments of Nolan’s first year. Like many parents, I quickly realized just how fast time now moves and milestones pass by. From the tiny fingers turning into larger hands, to the newborn scrunch and stretch turning into “hi momma” when you wake them up. The first smiles, and the playful giggles that seem to change overnight. Freezing those fleeting moments behind the camera became more than a hobby; it became something I truly loved.
Over the past year, I’ve focused mostly on family sessions with a focus on newborn and young children. I have a special love and excitement for capturing these irreplaceable memories for families, with every session feeling like a gift. I get to help families preserve the magic of their children’s lives. Those small details you never want to forget.
This is only the beginning of a journey I hope will be a beautiful and long-lived passion. I’m so grateful to every family who has trusted me so far, and I can’t wait to keep growing, learning, and sharing more of my work!
A Peek Behind the Lens
Since I’m asked about my gear from time to time, I thought it would be fun to share a little bit about my setup and process!
I started with a used Canon T6i that I purchased off of Facebook Marketplace, paired with a nifty 50mm lens. This was the perfect camera for me to learn the basics of shooting in manual controls. After a couple of sessions and really feeling like I had a good grasp on my camera settings, I sold this camera body and upgraded to a mirrorless system.
For professional sessions, I now use a Canon R5 as my main camera body. Most often, you’ll see me using this with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lens as I have found that it really is the perfect option for almost every situation. I have recently added an EF 50mm f/1.2 to my setup. The beauty that this lens captures, especially for portraits and newborn sessions, is just breathtaking!
For everyday photos with my own family, I like to keep things simple. I use a Canon M50 with a 22mm f/2.0 lens. I find that it is small enough to fit in any bag, but it can still capture great detail that almost rivals my professional camera body. When I want something a little more fun and retro, I reach for my Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo. It has been such a joy to play with and have a way to print keepsakes right in the moment.
With each session, I use Narrative to quickly sort and cull galleries and then Adobe Lightroom to edit. Finished galleries are delivered through Pixieset, which makes it easy to view, download, and share photos.
At the end of the day, the gear isn’t what makes a photo special. It’s the story that it freezes and memories for the family. The details and moment happening right in front of the lens. My job is to preserve those memories in a way you can hold onto forever.
